  • Asset Allocation – The process of dividing investments among different asset categories like stocks, bonds, and cash.
     
  • Annuity – A financial product that pays out income and is often used as part of retirement strategy.
     
  • Appreciation – An increase in the value of an asset over time.
     
  • Basis Point (bps) – One one-hundredth of a percent (0.01%), used to measure interest rates or investment returns.
     
  • Beneficiary – The person or entity designated to receive assets from a financial account or insurance policy.
     
  • Bond – A fixed-income investment representing a loan made by an investor to a borrower.
     
  • Broker – A person or firm that executes buy and sell orders for investors.
     
  • Capital Gain – The profit from the sale of an asset when it is sold for more than its purchase price.
     
  • Compound Interest – Interest calculated on both the initial principal and the accumulated interest from prior periods.
     
  • Credit Score – A number that reflects your creditworthiness, used by lenders to assess risk.

  • RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) – Minimum amount that must be withdrawn annually from certain retirement accounts.
     
  • Risk Tolerance – The degree of variability in investment returns an investor is willing to withstand.
     
  • Roth IRA – A retirement account funded with after-tax dollars that grows tax-free. Qualified withdrawals of earnings from the account are tax-free. Withdrawals of earnings prior to age 59 ½ or prior to the account being opened for 5 years, whichever is later, may result in a 10% IRS penalty tax. Limitations and restrictions may apply.
